The Romanian Information Service stated on Thursday that, although the TikTok network became available outside of China only in 2017, respectively in Europe in 2018, it was possible to create accounts and use the platform since 2016, including people from outside the People's Republic of China, by using Virtual Private Network anonymization services.
"The social network TikTok was launched in China, under the name "A.me" in September 2016, and since then has been available for the creation of accounts from the territory of the People's Republic of China. Although it became available outside of China only in 2017, respectively in Europe in 2018, it was possible to create accounts and use the platform since 2016, including people from outside the People's Republic Chinese through the use of Virtual Private Network anonymization services," SRI says.
According to the cited source, "in November 2017, the company acquired the start-up Musical.ly from Shanghai, a video sharing application created in July 2014 (having at the time of the acquisition over 70 million downloads, respectively over 200 million accounts), existing accounts at its level being taken over and integrated at the level of the TikTok application".
"Most of the accounts taken over by TikTok from Musical.ly were given usernames followed by random numbers (e.g. "user472350"). Also, the marketing of already created accounts on social media platforms is a very common practice" , explained the Romanian Information Service.
