Social Democratic Party (PSD) President Sorin Grindeanu said on Wednesday that it wasn't easy to convince Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan to accept the inclusion of the solidarity measures package in the 2026 budget, adding that the head of Government did not agree to the measures until he threatened to block proceedings in Parliament.
Grindeanu was asked at the Romania TV private television station if there is a timeframe for implementing the measures regarding the increase in fuel prices.
"The decision lies with the Executive, with the Prime Minister, with the Finance Minister, with the Energy Minister. Things must move in a decisive direction. Beyond issuing a public warning, as I did last week after the budget, I ask you to please see the statements I made and I publicly urged for a decision to be taken and concrete solutions to be adopted, there is nothing more I can do. We are trying to be proactive, to come up with solutions, to try an push for solutions, as we did last week. You should know, it wasn't easy to convince the prime minister, and I clearly say the prime minister, not the USR [Save Romania Union], not the PNL [National Liberal Party] and no one else, to accept the inclusion in the budget of that solidarity package. He did not accept this thing until we threatened to block proceedings in Parliament," PSD President Grindeanu said.
He was also asked whether the PSD is ready to take on the role of the main force in the Opposition should negotiations between the PNL and the Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) prove successful.
"Obviously! There is a majority even without the PSD. I have seen the overtures sent by both the Prime Minister and a certain prominent leader, some yes, others not, from the PNL to the AUR. It is their business, we do not decide for the PNL, we do not decide for the USR, we decide for ourselves and for the path the PSD takes. I have said what we rule out from the outset, I see others do not do so, that is their business," Sorin Grindeanu replied.
