Raising taxes in the private sector would be a fundamental mistake, as it would undermine Romania's goal of returning to economic growth, acting Labour, Family, Youth and Social Solidarity Minister Dragos Pislaru said on Tuesday.
He argued that any move to increase the tax burden on private companies would "hit exactly the sector we need to support" in order to restart growth. "Trying anything that effectively knocks down the private sector, just to bring in money that the economy does not currently generate, is a mistake," Pislaru said, agerpres reports.
The minister also referred to the warnings issued by Eugen Radulescu, a senior representative of the National Bank of Romania, who cautioned against the risks of higher taxation. Pislaru added that the Finance Ministry's objective is to put Romania back on a path of "healthy growth," and that European projects and EU funding are aligned with the same goal.
