A rejection from President Klaus Iohannis to appoint Lia Olguta Vasilescu to the Regional Development and Public Administration Ministry would be a "gross violation" of the fundamental law and of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR)'s decision, on Wednesday night asserted the ruling Social Democrat party (PSD) head Liviu Dragnea, at the end of the party's National Executive Committee's meeting.

"We are used to Mr. Iohannis's doing whatever he likes. Beyond the Constitution, beyond the law. So, everything is possible. But it would be a gross violation of the fundamental law and of the CCR's decision (...) If he says no, we will act constitutionally. But, if this happens, we'll have a consultation," he added.

When asked whether PSD also has a plan B in case of such a denial on behalf of the president, Dragnea said that "given the situation in Romania, we always have at least another two plans."

Prime minister Viorica Dancila voiced hope that the president will sign the decrees appointing Lia Olguta Vasilescu to the Regional Development and Public Administration Ministry and Mircea Draghici to the Transports Ministry.

"Hopefully, Mr. President will sign these appointments (...) considering that shortly all of the Cabinet has to take off for Brussels to meet the College of Commissioners," she said.

Dancila added that she will not send again to President Iohannis the decisions of removal from office of Paul Stanescu, Deputy PM and minister of Regional Development and Public Administration, and of Lucian Sova, Transports minister, because she has already sent those and now she is submitting the nominations.

"I'm not going to submit once again what I've already submitted. I hope it is taken into account what a Romanian Prime minister requests," Dancila specified.
