Romania's men's sabre team won the bronze on Monday at the World Fencing Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, after defeating Japan 45-41 in the match for the third spot.
Team Romania (Radu Nitu, Vlad Covaliu, Razvan Ursachi, George Dragomir) outperformed on Sunday Venezuela 45-23 in the first round, and defeated Russia on Monday 45-38 in the round of 16, before claiming a 45-43 victory against France in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, however, the tricolors lost to Hungary 40-45.
In the medal match with Japan (Mao Kokubo, Kaito Streets, Shido Tsumori, Kento Yoshida), the Asians had a 30-22 lead, but the team coached by Valeri Sturbabin and Tiberiu Dolniceanu managed to turn the score around in the last three five-touch bouts, with Ursachi putting up an exceptional performance awarded with 13-4, and Vlad Covaliu and Radu Nitu consolidating the success.
Italy and Hungary will now battle in the final.
The sabre fencers brought Romania its first medal at the World Championships in Tbilisi.
