Romania imported a total of 1.612 million tonnes oil equivalent of usable natural gas (toe) in the first 11 months of 2024, which is 15.7% lower (-313,500 toe) compared to the same period last year, according to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Domestic natural gas production totalled 6.912 million toe in the mentioned period, which is 1% higher than the January-November 2023 period (+70,300 toe).

According to estimates by the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis (CNSP), natural gas production is expected to increase at an average annual rate of 1.7% until 2027, after a 1.4% increase in 2023.

Thus, in the latest Energy Balance Forecast, natural gas production for 2024 is projected to reach 7.675 million tonnes of oil equivalent, an increase of 0.6%. For 2025, it is forecasted to be 7.79 million toe (+1.5%), for 2026 it will rise to 7.907 million toe (+1.5%), and for 2027 it is expected to reach 8.176 million toe (+3.4%).

Regarding imports, an over 10% increase in natural gas imports is projected for 2024, after which a decreasing trend is expected, with a more pronounced reduction by 2027 (-6%), in line with the growth in production as new capacities come into operation, but also considering the continuation of transit to external markets.

CNSP estimates natural gas imports of 2.392 million toe (up 11.1%) for 2024, 2.211 million toe (down 7.6%) for 2025, 2.150 million toe (down 2.7%) for 2026, and 2.022 million toe (down 6%) for 2027. AGERPRES
