Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan said he wants Romania to become the first country in the world where the World Bank finances nuclear energy production, following talks in Washington with the institution's president, Ajay Banga.
"My objective in Washington is clear: for Romania to become the first country in the world where the World Bank finances nuclear energy production. Today I had a very good meeting with Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, on energy investments that support the competitiveness of Romania's economy and create jobs. Romania needs massive, bankable investments in urban heating and energy efficiency, modernisation of networks to integrate renewables, gas storage and flexibility for supply security, as well as nuclear energy as a pillar of stability in the energy mix," Ivan wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
He added that these priorities have already been defined as key investment platforms, and that the partnership with the World Bank is complementary to EU funding and aimed precisely at unlocking such investments.
"I have called for a rapid move towards a One World Bank Group' package for project preparation, programmatic financing and guarantees to reduce the cost of capital and attract investors. The result for people and businesses: lower medium-term costs, more efficient systems and a more competitive economy, supported by modern and secure energy infrastructure. I thank my colleagues Alexandru Nazare and Dragos Pislaru for their cooperation and support for these strategic directions, which we are promoting these days in Washington," the Energy Minister added.
