Romania urgently needs an increase in natural gas storage capacity to which the state and private companies can contribute, given that the current capacity is the same as 20 years ago, said on Wednesday the executive director of the Electricity Producers Association (HENRO), Silvia Vlasceanu.
"In 2004, the natural gas storage capacity was increased. From 2004 until now it has been about the same, around 3 billion cubic meters, in the conditions in which, at that time, Hungary had less than and now it is approaching 8 billion cubic meters, in the conditions in which Hungary has insignificant gas deposits compared to our country. Romania is just getting ready to become the main natural gas producer, and we are still left with the same storage capacity. What does this tell us? At some point, export them, because you don't even have anywhere to store them. (...) We will not burn them and it is not good to burn gas without added value", mentioned Silvia Vlasceanu, at the "Natural Gas Forum - Industry - strategic pillar for Romania's GDP; The role of natural gas in ensuring the competitiveness of the economy," organized by the publication Financial Intelligence.
In his opinion, increasing natural gas storage capacity could be done with the support of the state and private companies.
"This is where the state must intervene, but also private companies to urgently increase the natural gas storage capacity. What warms me up, literally and figuratively, is that we have a 98% storage level, under the conditions in which the capacity is the same as 20 years ago. When we manage to increase our capacity, I'm not saying that we will manage to reach the performance of Hungary, which said: you have gas, we do the storage. And look, it becomes a pole of stability and energy security in the area. We have only been saying for years, energy hub, but we are still more political statements and fewer facts," mentioned Silvia Vlasceanu.
