Romania wins first medal in table tennis in the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games

Romanian table tennis players Eduard Ionescu and Darius Movileanu brought Romania its first medal at the Summer University Games - FISU 2025, in the Rhine-Ruhr region (Germany), bronze in the men's doubles event, after losing the semifinal to the Japanese Shunsuke Okano/Yuma Tanigaki, 1-4 (5-11, 5-11, 11-9, 5-11, 7-11).

In the quarterfinals, Ionescu and Movileanu defeated the French Vincent Picard/Bastien Rembert 4-2 (7-11, 8-11, 11-4, 12-10, 11-9, 12-10).

Eduard Ionescu secured a medal in the men's singles, as she is set to play in the semifinals against Russian Vladimir Sidorenko. Ionescu defeated Polish Dawid Michna, 4-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-7, 11-8), in the round of 16, and in the quarterfinals he defeated American Sid Naresh, 4-1 (11-3, 10-12, 11-9, 15-13, 11-4).

Romania is participating in the Universiade in Germany with a delegation of 78 people, including 64 athletes, in 9 disciplines: athletics (women's), basketball (women's, men's), rhythmic gymnastics, swimming (women's, men's), judo (women's, men's), beach volleyball (women's, men's), taekwondo (women's, men's), archery (women's, men's), table tennis (women's, men's).
