The Romanian Embassy in the USA and the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) in New York, in partnership with the Maramures County Council and with the support of several local partners, will organize, between July 12-14, 2024, in Washington, the third edition of the "Romanian Weekend at The Wharf" festival, Romania's largest cultural diplomacy project in the United States, but also the largest Romanian festival in America, Romania's Embassy in the USA informs in a release.
The festival is part of the annual program initiated and coordinated by the Romanian Embassy, "Romania - USA: A partnership for new economic horizons. For 20 years together under the umbrella of NATO".
The "Romanian Weekend in Washington" offers the public a diverse, accessible and attractive cultural offer, emphasizing the uniqueness of traditional Romanian culture, for which there is great interest among Americans, the Embassy's press release states.
The public will be able to enjoy concerts, dance performances, performative readings, exhibitions of Romanian books in English translation, craft demonstrations, activities for children, exhibitions of clothes and jewelry inspired by traditional forms, tasting of specific dishes and wine, organized on the elegant The Wharf esplanade, one of the most popular and fashionable areas of Washington, D.C., located on the banks of the Potomac River, not far from the Capitol.
On the stage of the third edition of the "Romanian Weekend in Washington" there will be a series of Romanian and Romanian-American artists, covering different areas and cultural expressions: Simion-Bogdan Mihai and Lautarii de Matase, Paula Hriscu, Vox Maris Chicago, the "Transylvania" National Folk Ensemble and the "Dantausii from Grosi" ensemble, "Carpathia" folk dance ensemble, Andreea Rebaltescu.
During the three days, from Friday to Sunday, the dance performances and concerts will be complemented by a series of performative readings, within a series held by the Romanian-American organization "Bucharest Inside the Beltway" from Denver, Colorado, featuring Lady Godiva, Adela Sinclair, Domnica Radulescu and Cristina Afodorcei.
In the specially arranged tents, the well-known Romanian designer Izabela Mandoiu will exhibit contemporary clothing creations inspired by popular clothing. The "UNA peste alta" brand will present earrings inspired by folklore. There will also be pottery demonstrations by master potter Vasile Chira from Carbunari, wood carving demonstrations by master Ioan Barsan and weaving demonstrations by Marioara Dobrican.
A book exhibition will also be organized, including volumes signed by Romanian and Romanian-American authors that were recently published. Also, an interactive exhibition of folk costumes presented by the collector Bogdan Banu will be mounted, a stand will be set up to present the offer of ethno-tourism and cultural tourism from Romania and, last but not least, stands will be set up with products and Romanian wines, with related tasting.
Saturday, July 13, 2024, will also be marked the Universal Day of Romanian Blouse [ia] through a special event organized within the festival with the help of the organization Romanians of DC. In the American capital, admirers (and wearers) from the USA, Romania and the Republic of Moldova will gather on the stage at The Wharf to read the "Proclamation" issued by the mayor of Washington in honor of the gorgeous Romanian blouses.
