Romania's H1 current account deficit narrows by 18 pct YoY

The current account of Romania's H1 balance of payments was running a deficit of 9.826 billion euros, down by more than 18 percent from 11.997 billion euros in the year-ago period, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) announced on Monday, told Agerpres.

The goods deficit was by 1.447 billion euros lower, the primary income deficit increased by 847 billion euros, while the surplus of the balance of secondary revenues was by 125 million euros less.

The country's total external debt increased by 14.672 billion euros over January - June 2023, with the long-term external debt amounting to 112.591 billion euros as of June 30, 2023 (70.7 percent of the total external debt), up by 15.2 percent from December 31, 2022, and the short-term external debt standing at 46.642 billion euros (29.3 percent of the total external debt), down 0.4 percent compared to the level registered on December 31, 2022.

The long-term external debt service ratio was 14.9 percent between January - June 2023, compared to 16.2 percent in 2022. The goods and services import cover was 5.1 months as of June 30, 2023, compared to 4.4 months as of December 31, 2022.

The ratio of BNR's foreign exchange reserves to the short-term external debt by remaining maturity was 90.5 percent as of June 30, 2023 compared to 80.2 percent as of December 31, 2022.
