Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse on Thursday reached the quarterfinals of the Korea Open WTA 250 tournament in Seoul, South Korea, prize money USD283,347, after a three-set victory over a South Korean opponent, Yeonwoo Ku, 2-6 7-6 (7/1) 6-1.
Ruse, 28, ranked 66th, prevailed in two hours and 16 minutes.
After badly losing the first set, Ruse, the fourth seed, was down 4-2 in the second set, but found resources to equalise and send the match to a tiebreak, where she won clearly (7-1). Ruse also dominated the decisive set, winning 6-1.
Ruse finished the match with three aces and three double faults, while Ku, 23, ranked 180th, had two aces and committed eight double faults.
Ruse won USD 7,025 dollars and 54 WTA singles points, and her next opponent will be Hungarian Anna Bondar, the sixth seed, who needed three hours and 15 minutes to overcome Armenian player Alina Cearaeva, 6-4 6-7 (6/8) 7-6 (7/5), a match in which the loser committed 16 double faults.
Ruse is 2-1 in the head-to-head count versus Bondar, 29, ranked 69th, against whom she retired at 2-4 in 2015, in the semifinals in Antalya, but defeated her in 2021, in the round of 16 in Bellinzona, 5-7 6-1 7-6 (7/5), and in 2023, in the round of 16 at the Transylvania Open, 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.
