Mircea Abrudean, President of the Romanian Senate, expressed on Friday Romania's sincere gratitude for the Republic of Korea's steadfast support in Romania's OECD accession process. The remarks came during a meeting with his South Korean counterpart, Woo Won-shik, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, who holds the country's second-highest official position.

The Korean official was on an official visit to Bucharest in the context of celebrating 35 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The discussions took place in a cordial atmosphere and reaffirmed the mutual commitment to fostering a steady and diversified bilateral cooperation. According to a Senate press release, key elements of the strategic partnership between Romania and the Republic of Korea were reviewed, with particular emphasis on political dialogue, parliamentary collaboration, and expanding economic ties.

On this occasion, it was emphasized that bilateral trade hit a record USD 1.5 billion in 2023, underscoring the strong momentum in economic relations and paving the way for opportunities in sectors such as defense, nuclear energy, infrastructure, IT&C, agriculture, and healthcare. Particular attention was given to the joint project at Cernavoda, where Romania and South Korea are collaborating to develop Europe's first detritiation facility - an important strategic step toward the future of nuclear fusion.

The parties also discussed expanding cultural cooperation through the establishment of a Romanian Cultural Center in Seoul, as well as the possibility of introducing a direct Bucharest-Seoul air route to support tourism and business mobility.

"We wish to express Romania's gratitude for the Republic of Korea's steady support in our OECD accession process - a national strategic objective that reflects our shared commitment to an open market economy, effective governance, and high international standards," stated the Romanian Senate President.

In turn, the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea emphasized the strategic similarities between the two countries, praising their shared democratic resilience. He reaffirmed Korea's interest in expanding commercial ties and cooperation in technology transfer.

Alongside the Senate president, the Romanian delegation included Senator Nicoleta Pauliuc, Chair of the Defense, Public Order, and National Security Committee; Senator Cristian-Augustin Niculescu-Tagarlas, chair of the Culture and Media Committee; Senator Stefan Palarie, leader of the USR Senate group, and Cezar Armeanu, Romania's Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.
