Senator Titus Corlatean says that his election as head of the PACE special committee for the election of judges to the European Court of Human Rights is "an important recognition of the Romanian school of international and European law in the field of human rights."
"Leaders of political groups in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg (SOC, EPP, ALDE, GUE, Conservative) and, subsequently, MEPs from different states, members of the PACE Special Committee for the Election of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) have honoured me by electing me as head of this committee. The said committee has a special responsibility within the Strasbourg Organization, as it has a large European impact in all 47 member states of the Council of Europe. I have been a member of this committee with a small number of members for several years now, and I have even been its vice-president until December, but I have never thought, honestly, that a Romanian would have the opportunity to take this responsibility, because the stakes are important and the important European state players, when it comes to such institutional systems, they prefer to be the decision-makers," Corlatean wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
He added that his election was "an important recognition of the Romanian school of international and European law in the field of human rights," and underscored that one can succeed politically in Europe including when coming "from Bucharest", Agerpres.ro informs.
"With hard work and seriousness. However, the difficult part is ahead now, although I already know the "field" and I know what it is to be done, with objectivity and impartiality. And with a composition of good quality of the PACE committee, including members from all European parliamentary groups. We are expecting candidates from several European states to come to the hearings in Paris and Strasbourg, including candidates from Romania. And I hope that the Romanian list selected through the national procedure started by the former Government and completed by the current Executive will be a very good one, corresponding to the criteria and requirements in the field. I assure you that in this case, too, I will have the same objective and impartial conduct, in my European capacity, this time," he said.
