Seven Ukrainian men who crossed the Tisza River were found by the border police on Romanian territory, spokesperson for Maramures Emergencies Committee Dan Buca said on Thursday.
They applied for asylum in Romania.
"Maramures border police found on the border of Maramures county with Ukraine seven Ukrainian citizens who crossed from Ukraine to Romania, in the area of competence of the Sighetu Marmatiei Border Police Sector. All the Ukrainian citizens, men between the ages of 18 and 59, applied for a form of protection for the Romanian state. Specific procedures have been initiated," said Dan Buca.
Maramures firefighters also transported seven people with the special vehicle, accompanied by gendarmes, from the Sighetu Marmatiei Border Checkpoint to the Sighetu Marmatiei Municipal Stadium.
At the same time, another seven people, accompanied by gendarmes, were transported from the Sighetu Marmatiei Territorial Border Police Inspectorate to the Maramures Regional Center for Accommodation and Procedures for Asylum Seekers in Somcuta Mare.
Also, 25 people were transported by special vehicles, accompanied by gendarmes, from the Sighetu Marmatiei Border Checkpoint to the Sighetu Marmatiei Railway Station, from where they left by train to Bucharest, Agerpres informs.
