Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse qualified for the first time for the second round of the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament, after defeating American McCartney Kessler, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3), on Monday in Paris.
Ruse (27 years old, WTA's 80th) sealed her victory after two hours and 4 minutes of play.
Gabriela Ruse won a cheque of 117,000 euros and 70 WTA points for reaching this far in the competition, and she will face Spaniard Paula Badosa (27 years old, WTA's 10th) in the second round.
The score of the direct matches is equal between the two, 1-1. Ruse won in 2022, in the first round in Dubai, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, and Badosa won last year in the third round at the US Open, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (10/8).
Ruse is for the second time appearing on the main draw of singles at the Roland Garros, after losing in the first round in 2022.
