Romania's men's tennis team will face Portugal in the World Group I play-off of the Davis Cup, according to the draw held on Monday at the World Tennis headquarters in London.
The tie will take place in Portugal from February 5 to 7, 2027, agerpres reports.
Romania lead Portugal 2-1 in their head-to-head record, having won their last two encounters. In 1988, Portugal won 3-2 in the quarter-finals of the Europe Zone Group I, with Romania's points scored by Adrian Marcu and Mihai Vanta. In 1995, Romania won 3-2 in the semi-finals of the Europe-Africa Zone Group I, following victories by Adrian Voinea (two) and Dinu Pescariu. Their most recent meeting took place in 2021 at the Horia Demian Sports Hall in Cluj-Napoca, with Romania winning 3-1 in the first round of World Group I, thanks to victories by Marius Copil (two) and the Marius Copil/Horia Tecau doubles pairing.
Romania defeated Indonesia 4-0 on September 18-19 in Jakarta in the first round of World Group II. Portugal beat El Salvador 3-0 away from home earlier this month in the same stage of the competition.
While Romania have no player ranked in the top 200, Portugal have two players in the top 100: Nuno Borges (ATP No. 49) and Jaime Faria (No. 61). Romania are ranked 42nd in the world, while Portugal are 34th.
