Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, third seeded, qualified on Monday for the quarterfinals of Miami Open tournament, with total prize money worth 6,993,450 USD, after she defeated Australian Samantha Stosur, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Halep (25 years), WTA's 5th, who registered as a first several victories in Florida, won to the 14th seeded Australian after two hours and ten minutes.
Halep now leads Stosur (32, WTA's 19th), with 5-4 overall. Stosur had won the most recent match last year in the round of 16 in Roland Garros, 7-6 (0), 6-3, after four consecutive victories of the Romanian player (including one in 2016, in the Madrid semifinals, 6-2, 6-0). The score on hard courts is 4-1 for Simona.
Simona Halep secured a 146,575-USD cheque and 215 WTA points, and in the quarterfinals she will meet British Johanna Konta, who won 7-5, 6-1 to Spanish player Lara Arruabarrena. Konta (25, WTA's 11th), seeded 10th, won the only previous match between the two, carried out in 2015, in Wuhan (China), in the round of 16, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. It will be a preview of the Fed Cup match between Romania's and UK's teams.
