Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea debuted with a victory at the WTA 1,000 tournament in Cincinnati (Ohio), with total prizes of 5,152,599 US dollars, while Jaqueline Cristian and Gabriela Ruse lost in the first round.
Cirstea (35 years old, WTA's 138) defeated Croatian Donna Vekic (29 years old, WTA's 53), 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, in two hours and 20 minutes.
Cirstea is now 5-2 in direct matches with Vekic, and she won a cheque of 18,200 US dollars and 35 WTA points for qualifying for the second round.
In the second round, Cirstea will face Polish Magdalena Frech (27 years old, WTA's 25), who won their only head-to-head match in 2023, in the second round in Birmingham, 6-3, 6-7 (1/7), 6-4.
