Three Romanian teams secure quarterfinals spot at European Youth Table Tennis Championships

Three Romanian teams secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the European Youth Table Tennis Championships taking place between July 12 - 21 in Malmo, Sweden.

In the U-19 category, the Romanian boys' team defeated Slovenia 3-0 in the round of 16, thanks to points scored by Andrei Istrate, 3-2 (9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-7) in the match against Petrovski Vovk; Darius Movileanu, 3-0 (11-6, 11-7, 11-8) against Miha Podobnik; and Iulian Chirita, 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-3) with Matic Copar. In the quarterfinals the Romanians will play Poland on Monday (as of 14:20).

In the same age category, the Romanian girls' team sealed a 3-0 victory over Turkey in the round of 16, and is next to play the Czech Republic on Monday (12:00).

Bianca Mei-Rosu defeated Busra Demir 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-7); Alesia Sferlea won against Banu Simsek 3-1 (11-5, 6-11, 11 -6, 11-7), and Andrea Teglas overcame Asude Simsek by 3-0 (12-10, 11-3, 11-6).

In the U-15 event, the Romanian boys' team defeated Sweden 3-1 in the round of 16, and is to play Poland on Monday (as of 12:00) in the quarterfinals. Robert Istrate bagged two singles victories: 3-1 (8-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9) against Sigge Hedblad, and 3-0 (12-10, 11-9, 12-10) against Adam Wallin, and also chipped in to the 3-1 doubles victory, together with Mihai Nagy (11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6) against the duo Sigge Hedblad/Adam Wallin. In another match, Mihai Nagy lost to Adam Wallin 1-3 (11-9, 6-11, 4-11, 7-11).

Romania's Under-15 girls' team was defeated by Austria 3-1 in the round of 16 and will play for places 9-16; the first match is scheduled for Monday, with Turkey as opponent (as of 14:20).

The only victory in the clash with Austria was sealed by the pairing Iarina Precup/Andreea Baiasu, 3-1 (9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9) against Nina Skerbinz/Mariia Lytvyn.

According to the Romanian Table Tennis Federation, at the previous edition Romania won 17 medals of which 6 gold.
