Three Romanians reach round of 32 at World Table Tennis Championships

Three players advanced on Monday to the round of 32 in the singles events at the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in Doha (Qatar).

In the men's singles, Iulian Chirita defeated Belgium's Martin Allegro 4-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-9, 11-6), while Eduard Ionescu had a hard-fought victory over American Kanak Jha, winning 4-3 (6-11, 7-11, 4-11, 11-5, 15-13, 11-5, 11-6), according to the Romanian Table Tennis Federation's website.

In the women's singles, Bernadette Szocs easily defeated Zhiying Zeng (Chile) 4-0 (11-5, 11-4, 11-8, 11-3).

In the second round, Ioana Singeorzan lost her match against Yubin Shin (South Korea) 2-4 (11-9, 6-11, 5-11, 12-10, 5-11, 1-11), while Elizabeta Samara suffered an injury in the first set of her match against Izabela Lupulesku (Serbia) and was forced to withdraw, 0-4 (5-11, 0-11, 0-11, 0-11).

On Tuesday, Andreea Dragoman will face Sofia Polcanova from Austria.

In the men's doubles, Ovidiu Ionescu and Alvaro Robles (Spain), the 2019 World Championship runners-up, qualified for the round of 16 after defeating the Australian pair Hwan Bae/Aditya Sareen 3-1 (11-5, 11-2, 8-11, 11-5). Iulian Chirita and Eduard Ionescu lost in the round of 16 to Chinese duo Lin Gaoyuan/Lin Shidong 0-3 (6-11, 6-11, 10-12).

In the women's doubles, Bernadette Szocs and Sofia Polcanova advanced to the round of 16 after a 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-7) win over the Mexican pair Clio Barcenas/Arantxa Cossio, while Adina Diaconu and Maria Xiao (Spain) defeated Lucia Cordero/Hidalynn Zapata (Guatemala) 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-9).

In mixed doubles, Ovidiu Ionescu and Elizabeta Samara qualified for the round of 16 after a 3-1 (11-5, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9) win over Türkiye's Ibrahim Gunduz/Sibel Altinkaya, but later withdrew from the competition due to Elizabeta Samara's injury. AGERPRES
