The volume of turnover in retail trade (excluding the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles) decreased in the first two months of the year, compared with the period 1 January to 28 February 2025, both as a gross series, by 7.6%, and as a series adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, by 6.1%, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Wednesday.
According to the INS, the volume of turnover in retail trade (excluding the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, in the period 1 January to 28 February 2026, compared with the period 1 January to 28 February 2025, recorded an overall decrease of 7.6%, due to declines in sales of non-food products (-10.7%), retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated shops (-9.8%) and sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (-2.3%).
The volume of turnover in retail trade (excluding the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles), adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, in the period 1 January to 28 February 2026, compared with the period 1 January to 28 February 2025, recorded an overall decrease of 6.1%, due to declines in sales of non-food products (-8.8%), retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated shops (-3.8%) and sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (-1.7%).
INS data show that the volume of turnover in retail trade (excluding the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, in February 2026 compared with the previous month, decreased overall by 0.4%, due to declines in retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated shops (-1.2%) and sales of non-food products (-0.9%). Sales of food products, beverages and tobacco increased 0.6%.
The volume of turnover in retail trade (excluding the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles), adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, increased overall in February 2026 compared with the previous month by 0.2%, due to increases in sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (+1.2%) and sales of non-food products (+0.1%). Retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated shops went down 0.4%.
At the same time, the volume of turnover in retail trade (excluding the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, in February 2026 compared with February 2025, recorded an overall decline of 6.8%, due to declines in retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated shops (-10.3%), sales of non-food products (-10.1%) and sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.5%).
The volume of turnover in retail trade (excluding the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles), adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, in February 2026 compared with February 2025, recorded an overall drop of 6.2%, due to declines in sales of non-food products (-9.4%), retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated shops (-4.3%) and sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.8%).
