National Defence Minister Angel Tilvar approved, on an emergency basis, that two C-27J Spartan aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, configured for firefighting, be deployed on Tuesday to extinguish the wildfire in Svinita commune in Mehedinti county..
According to a National Defence Ministry (MApN) press release sent to AGERPRES, the air mission is being carried out at the request of the Department for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Interior.
So far, three missions have been executed over the affected area, and the action is ongoing, the MApN reports.
According to MApN, in firefighting configuration, the C-27J Spartan aircraft can carry up to 6,000 litres of water (maximum six containers) per pass.
Aircraft of this type of the Romanian Air Force have acted, since 2017 and up to now, to extinguish several forest fires in the country in the counties of Mehedinti, Alba, Hunedoara and Buzau.
Also, in previous years, aircraft of this type have executed missions to extinguish forest fires in France, the Republic of Slovenia, Greece and North Macedonia.
