Two Syrians traveling on a train operating on the Bucharest North - Vienna route were ordered to get off the carriages before leaving the country at Curtici, after border police, during a routine check, discovered they were not authorised to enter the Schengen Area.
"During the check, the individuals were unable to present travel documents, and as a result, they were taken to the sector headquarters for further verification. Following the investigation, the individuals were identified as Syrian citizens, aged 19 and 22, who were not allowed to travel within the Schengen Area," a press release from the Arad Border Police informs.
The investigation is ongoing, and the Syrians are at risk of facing criminal charges for illegally crossing the state border.
Following Romania's full accession to the Schengen Area, border police conduct random checks in the border area with Hungary, particularly on roads, but also on the railway, based on risk analyses.
