He headed the UDMR delegation to the consultations with President Klaus Iohannis on Justice.
Kelemen Hunor spoke about the recent Venice Commission report on changes to the laws of Justice.
"As compared to other reports made by this commission, this time there is a lack of comparison between the Member States of the European Union, how Justice works, how Justice is built. Such a comparison would have been good, especially in terms of appointments of magistrates, changes, the system as it is built and how it works, because there is no uniform practice in the European Union in this regard," the UDMR chairman said.
He added that some of the points mentioned by the Venice Commission were solved by the emergency ordinance adopted by the Government.
"We are open to any discussion on these issues related to the laws of Justice, but we must see how it can be done in such a way that the most important principle, the independence of Justice, should not be affected, this independence be ensured," Kelemen Hunor pointed out.
He also brought into discussion the 2005 Venice Commission report on the draft law on the status of national minorities. "Since then, everyone has been silent," the UDMR leader said.
"The Venice Commission must be taken seriously when it comes to the laws of Justice and when it comes to the Constitution and when it comes to the status of minorities so that no one has the impression in Romania that the Venice Commission is only used when someone has an interest or someone wants to reach a goal, a particular goal," Kelemen Hunor pointed out.
Asked if a political consensus could be reached on the Justice matter, the UDMR leader said: "We would need four or five areas where we should reach a consensus, but I am under the impression that it is impossible now."
UDMR's Kelemen Hunor: 'Consensus needed in four-five areas, but I think it is impossible now'
A consensus in several areas, including Justice, is necessary, but it is impossible to achieve it today, Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) chairman Kelemen Hunor said on Wednesday.
