Romania's first independent theatre festival, UNDERCLOUD, now reaching its 18th edition, will take place starting Thursday through October 5 in 18 venues along Calea Grivitei.

According to a press release sent to AGERPRES, the festival will open Thursday at 11:00 at G53 - the only independent theatre built from scratch in Romania in the past 35 years, located at 53 Calea Grivitei - with a press conference hosted by festival director and stage director Chris Simion-Mercurian.

Later the same day, at 17:00, art lovers will be able to attend the reopening of the Small Gallery of the Bucharest Fine Artists Association (AAPB), at 89 Calea Grivitei, following an extensive renovation. The event includes the opening of the exhibition "18 doubled", curated by Daniela Pavel and Silvana Dulama.

The day will close with the performance "Oameni si fiare" (People and Beasts) at 20:30 at Primitiv Plants, 73-75 Calea Grivitei. The play is adapted from Marin Sorescu's novel "The Vision of the Burrow" by Simona Maicanescu, with original score by Mircea Florian.

The UNDERCLOUD Gala will take place on Sunday, October 5, at J'ai Bistrot, with the entire festival team in attendance. The jury of the 18th edition - Rodica Mandache, Aura Corbeanu, Catinca Draganescu, Silvia Dumitrache, Ioana Marchidan, and Alina Epingeac - will present the UNDERCLOUD18 awards. Entry is free, within available seating.

Throughout the festival, audiences can also enjoy a unique meeting between theatre and visual arts at Black Habit café, where an exhibition of drawings, graphics, paintings, and photographs by students of the Bucharest National University of Arts will be displayed. The exhibition includes 18 works, one for each festival day and each year of UNDERCLOUD's history.

This year's program also features 14 free-entry performances reserved for residents of Bucharest's District 1, based on registration.

Festival events will be hosted at several venues, including the Museum of Literature, the Playwrights' Theatre, the Small Gallery, Black Habit, Primitiv Plants, J'ai Bistrot, Grivita 53, Grivita Creative Corner, L'Atelier, Zadar Bar, UNARTE, workshop spaces within MiniCloud, and in outdoor public areas.

The full program of UNDERCLOUD18, including these special performances, is available on the festival's official website, alongside detailed information and ticket links.

UNDERCLOUD18 is funded by District 1 City Hall and co-funded by Bucharest City Hall through ARCUB, under the "Bucharest. Together" 2025 Program.
