US ambassador Klemm meets five American basketballers in Transylvanian town

Hans Klemm

On an official visit to the Transylvanian county of Covasna on Tuesday, United States ambassador Hans Klemm met five American basketballers playing for the Sfantu Gheorghe, the county capital, women's basketball team Sepsi SIC, winner of the 2015 Romanian championship and Romania's Cup.

The American diplomat also made a book donation and inaugurated the "American Shelf" at the Sfantu Gheorghe County Library, and he was surprised to find Tyaunna Marshal, Chandra Harris, Rachel Mitchell, Tierney Pfirman and Chucky Jeffery among the participants in the event. Klemm said it was great to find five Americans playing for a local basketball team that won two titles, adding that he was proud of them.

American Shelves are part of partnerships in Romania between the US Embassy and local libraries, and they come to complete nine American Corners, designed to provide authorized information about the US and its culture, as well as about studying in the US and learning English. Included in the donation to the Sfantu Gheorghe County Library are classic and contemporary American literature, English language textbooks, as well as children's books for teachers, students and the public at large.

Klemm said the donation rounds up the American literature collection of the Bod Peter Library of Sfantu Gheorghe so that residents of Covasna County may find out more about and better understand America and the Americans.
