Save Romania Union (USR) and Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) parliamentarians criticized the management of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) on Tuesday, in the plenary session.
USR Deputy Claudiu Nasui declared that Romania needs a National Bank that has price stability as its fundamental objective.
"We need a National Bank that has price stability as its fundamental objective, not trying to fulfill other objectives, such as helping the Government in some key moments through lower interest rates and lighter indebting. We are addicted to this drug which is inflation which we will have a very hard time reversing due to the fact that the National Bank has kept interest rates too low for too long and this thing, although it may be a short-term celebration, is paid dearly in the long term. The only solution to be OK with the Board of Directors that we vote for at the BNR was to hear that they want to fight this scourge called inflation," Nasui said.
AUR MP George Simion stated that even the BNR Board of Directors has turned into a shelter from bad weather and "into a place for dinosaurs".
"Unfortunately, even the Board of Directors of the BNR has turned into a place for dinosaurs", Simion said.
The National Liberal Party (PNL) deputy Florin Roman specified that the liberals proposed a former minister of finance, a former president of the Chamber of Deputies and a presidential advisor to lead the BNR.
The budget committees of the Parliament gave a favorable opinion on Tuesday for the appointment of the members of the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Romania.
Mugur Isarescu received approval to be appointed president of the Board of Directors and governor of the National Bank of Romania. Leonardo Badea - vice-president of the Board and first vice-governor of the BNR, Florin Georgescu and Cosmin Stefan Marinescu - Board members and vice-governors of the BNR.
Aura Socol, Roberta Anastase, Alexandru Nazare, Csaba Balint and Cristian Popa received approval to be appointed members of the BNR's Board.
