Save Romania Union (USR) Chairwoman Elena Lasconi said on Saturday that Romania is not a poor, but an impoverished country, and urged party members and supporters to continue what the Romanians started in 1989.
"Romania is not a poor country, Romania is an impoverished country. How long will we still tolerate a health system that lets us give birth on the sidewalk in front of the hospital, or that lets a woman die in terrible agony," she said referencing several notorious cases of healthcare service failures which caused public outcry at that time. "How long will we still tolerate an education system that keeps our children in school for the longest time in all of Europe, but puts them on the second spot by functional illiteracy? (...) How long will we still invest with the power to decide over our lives these politicians who are only adept at amassing more for themselves?," Lasconi said in the opening of the USR extraordinary congress that is to elect today the party's National Bureau and its candidate for the presidential bid.
The new USR Chair emphasized that she wants to create a movement to continue what was started in December 1989.
"I'm coming forward to you not seeking to lead a party, I'm coming to you to create a movement, to continue what we started in 1989, to open the cage we've been locked up in for so long. I'm not here to advise patience to you, I'm here to tell you 'That's enough, brothers, drum up the fight, the time for change is now'," was Elena Lasconi's message to the audience.
She made it clear that Romania can have a better future.
"The politicians who rule us today are afraid of us, they are afraid of the power of the people, they fear that the many of us will unite and bring them down. The only ones who can change something are you, the Romanian people. The only ones who can decide how our country's history will be written are you. We have the duty to do this because, brothers, it is worth it," Lasconi said, exhorting grassroots support. "When a thief breaks into your home, you don't leave the house but kick him out instead. We can have better salaries in Romania, a health system that truly offers quality treatment, that handles people with empathy and respect. We can have a real education system for our children. We can do all this. We can ensure a future for Romania," Lasconi concluded her speech.
