Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu pointed out, in an event organized in the USA in partnership with the Community of Democracies, the need to capitalise on the potential of the young in democratically consolidating a society and on their capacity to recover after crisis, as well as to face current challenges.
According to a press release sent by MAE (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the topic on young people will be amongst Romania's priorities throughout its future presidency of the Community of Democracies, starting with September 2019, for a two year term.
On Romania's initiative, an event organized in partnership with the Community of Democracies, with the topic of "The role of young people in the democracy's resilience" took place on the sidelines of the general debates of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During his address, Minister Melescanu pointed out the need to capitalise on the potential of the young people in democratically consolidating a society and on their capacity to recover after crisis, as well as to face current challenges, MAE specifies.
Attending the talks was also Thomas E. Garrett, the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Tudor Ulianovschi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, as well as the representative of the UN Youth Association to Romania.
On the sidelines of the event, Minister Melescanu had a meeting with his counterpart from the Republic of Moldova, Tudor Ulianovschi, during which they discussed about elements of the bilateral relationship, as well as the evolution of relations between the EU and the Republic of Moldova.
Furthermore, Melescanu had a meeting with the Foreign Affairs Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, Riad Al Malki, where the head of the Romanian diplomacy reiterated Romania's traditional position towards the Peace Process in the Middle East and expressed his satisfaction towards the recent positive developments of the Romanian-Palestinian bilateral relationship.
According to the quoted source, the discussions highlighted the shared interest for developing and consolidating the bilateral cooperation, and the two dignitaries agreed on the importance of organizing a new meeting of the Romanian-Palestinian Intergovernmental Committee, in order to identify new cooperation opportunities in shared interest fields. The two ministers also approached a series of current topics on the regional agenda, with emphasis on developments in the Middle East Peace Process.
On Tuesday, the Minister for Foreign Affairs took part in a transatlantic dinner, hosted by the US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo.
Melescanu is part of the delegation that accompanies President Iohannis to the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, that takes place in New York, at the organization's headquarters.
