The Romanian Greek Catholic bishops celebrated on Tuesday at the Vatican the 40-day memorial service for Cardinal Lucian Muresan, who passed away on September 25 in Blaj, at the age of 94.

"During the days of meditation preceding the works of the Electoral Synod of the Bishops of the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic, the Synodal Bishops celebrated on November 4 the Holy Hierarchical Liturgy followed by the memorial service for the dead, on the 40th day since the passing to the Lord of His Beatitude Cardinal Lucian Muresan. The celebration took place near the tomb of the Holy Apostle Peter, in the grottoes of the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, where the Romanian Church United with Rome brought its offering of gratitude for the life, dedication and service of the deceased Cardinal," a statement posted on the website of the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic informs, agerpres reports.

Archbishop Michel Jalakh, Secretary of the Dicastery, participated on behalf of the Dicastery for the Oriental Churches.

"Also attending were those who have been close to His Beatitude Lucian over the years, with devotion, care and high professionalism: Dr. Alexandru Petarlecean and the Venerable Sisters Melania, Narcisa and Antoaneta from the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady," the release said.

The extraordinary session of the Synod of Bishops is taking place in Rome between November 2 and 6, called to elect the new Major Archbishop of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church following the death of the incumbent Primate of the congregation. Cardinal Lucian Muresan passed away on September 25, and was entombed in the "Holy Trinity" Major Archbishopric Cathedral in Blaj.
