Bucharest-Ilfov Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISUBIF) chief Irinel Precup said on Saturday that all 65 people found in an apartment building in Bucharest where a crack had been reported between two stairwells had been evacuated, with further measures to be decided following a meeting of the Committee for Emergency Situations.

"Expansion joints and movement in the building facade were noticed. My colleagues responded quickly and checked the structural integrity of the building. We also requested information from other authorities, including the State Inspectorate for Constructions, the Police, the Gendarmerie and the local council, in order to take the necessary measures to stabilise the situation," said the head of the Bucharest-Ilfov Emergency Situations Inspectorate, who was at the scene, agerpres reports.

He said that the entire apartment block had been temporarily evacuated, all occupants had been removed from the building and all utilities had been disconnected, mentioning that the authorities would restore the utilities depending on the Committee for Emergency Situations decision.

On Saturday, a resident called the 112 emergency number to report a crack between two stairwells of a residential building in the Drumul Taberei neighbourhood, extending from the fifth to the eighth floor.

Firefighters responded with the Special Rescue Unit, a fire engine equipped with water and foam, a SMURD emergency medical crew and a vehicle for transporting personnel and multiple casualties, in order to provide temporary shelter and protect the evacuated residents.

Inspectors from the State Inspectorate for Constructions were also called in to carry out a technical assessment.
