Climber Adrian Ahritculesei managed to conquer the Pico de Orizaba volcano (5,636 m), the highest volcano in North America and the highest mountain in Mexico, at the end of an ascent that lasted six hours, according to an announcement made by the 37-year-old from Petrosani on his social media page on Thursday.
"The ascent started from the Piedra Grande refuge and lasted a total of 9 hours, of which 6 hours to the summit. On the day of the summit I was lucky to have good weather, with a wind of about 20 km/h and clear sky," the climber from Petrosani told on Thursday.
Ahritculesei left for the expedition from Mexico on February 9, and during the preparation of the ascent he climbed for acclimatization on three peaks of over 4,000 m, so that, in the end, he reached the Pico de Orizaba volcano.
"The duration of the expedition was set between February 9 and 17. During this period I reached four peaks of over 4,000 meters: La Malinche, Sierra Negra, Iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba, which was my main target, being the highest volcano in North America. I climbed the other peaks to get acclimatized and to see as many places in Mexico as possible," said the climber.
Adrian Ahritculesei will arrive in Romania on February 19.
Last year, on January 25, climber Adrian Ahritculesei managed to climb the highest volcano in the world, Ojos del Salado (6,893 m), located in the Andes Mountains, on the border between Argentina and Chile.
The conquest of the Pico de Orizaba volcano is part of a project of the climber from Petrosani in which he aims to be the first Romanian man to do the "Seven Vulcanos" circuit, after Crina Coco Popescu, the first woman in the world to achieve this performance, Agerpres informs.
