Approximately 600 people participated on Friday in the reception offered by President Klaus Iohannis at the Cotroceni Palace, on the occasion of the National Day of Romania.
Among those attending the reception there were former presidents Tarian Basescu and Emil Constantinescu, Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu, prosecutor-in-chief of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) Laura Codruta Kovesi, Prosecutor General Augustin Lazar, head of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) Valter Dorneanu, ambassadors and representatives of the National Defence Ministry (MApN), the Interior Ministry (MAI) and different religious denominations.
Moreover, chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Ludovic Orban, chairman of the Save Romania Union (USR) Dan Barna, MPs of the two political parties, but also Eugen Teodorovici (the Social-Democratic Party - PSD) and Daniel Constantin (unaffiliated) attended the reception.
The head of state delivered a speech and after he welcomed some participants he retired.
President Klaus Iohannis stated in his speech that 2017 was a complex year, market by "large social convulsion" and challenges that questioned Romania's progresses regarding the fight against corruption and the functioning of the rule of law.
The head of state also said that politicians make up scenarios about "a different kind of stat" and he doesn't know to whom these "fictions" are useful, but voiced conviction that not to Romania's future.
President Klaus Iohannis stated that an analysis of the century that is ending must be carried out next year and clear objectives should be set out, but stressed that the efforts of all political forces, institutions and civil society are needed.
