Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Friday, during a visit to Bihor, that the interconnection of electricity and gas networks with neighbouring countries is important for mutual support in times of crisis.
When asked by journalists why Romania might choose Ukraine for natural gas storage in the context of exploiting the "Neptun Deep" resources, the Prime Minister said that energy network interconnection is important for all countries in the region.
"This does not mean that if Ukraine or another country has storage capacity, Romania will store gas in the respective country. It means that this possibility exists, we are in this part of Europe where, whenever we can, the countries in this part of Europe, in order to secure fuel reserves and to ensure diverse supply sources, must cooperate both in terms of interconnections - gas pipelines, high-voltage electricity networks, storage facilities, so that, when necessary, we can help each other," Ilie Bolojan said.
He mentioned that all countries in the region have interconnection systems, with those involving Ukraine and Serbia having been developed more extensively during the communist period, however, work is needed to improve the Hungary - Austria connection on the electricity component.
"And on the gas side, there are bottlenecks on the North-South corridor, in the Bulgaria area, where capacity still needs to be increased, so that these countries have the possibility of interconnection and can support each other in crisis situations," Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan explained.
