Out of 959 short films submitted, 41 selected for Alter-Native International Short Film Festival final

After screening the 959 films submitted to the 33rd edition of the Alter-Native International Short Film Festival, which will take place at the Palace of Culture in Targu Mures between November 5-9, the preview jury has selected 41 short films to compete in the final for the grand prize.

"The preselection of 959 films - a record number in the post-Covid period - submitted for this year's Alter-Native Festival competition has concluded. The top countries by number of submissions are Spain, Iran and Russia. Hungary submitted 75 films, while Romania 69. Romania's oldest and largest independent short film festival is organized for the 33rd time by UDTM from Mures county. Following deliberations by the preview jury, made up of György Durst (producer), Jenő Hartyándi (independent filmmaker), Radu Vasile Igazság (visual artist and film director, professor at the National University of Theatre and Film ‘I.L. Caragiale' in Bucharest), Előd Németh (journalist, film critic, artistic director of the Alter-Native International Short Film Festival), and Tibor Schneider (director, cinematographer at Romanian Television, associate professor at the University of Arts Targu-Mures), a number of 41 productions were selected to be screened at the Palace of Culture in Targu-Mures during the festivals's international competition from November 5 to 9," the organizers of the Alter-Native International Short Film Festival announced on Tuesday.

The 41 films included in the final of the 33rd edition of the Alter-Native festival come from 23 countries, with the most entries from Hungary (eight), Romania (six) and France (five).

"The nine-and-a-half-hour program includes 21 fiction shorts, 13 animations, five documentaries and two experimental films. The local competition, with a total duration of about two and a half hours, will feature 12 productions (six of which also compete in the international contest), including five fiction films, four animations, two documentaries and one experimental film. Prizes will be decided by the festivalss international jury, made up of Nicoleta Marica (actress, performer and founding member of the Dra.ma Association - Acting for Life), Gábor Viola (actor and UNITER Award winner), Tamás Patrovits (animated film director, graphic artist, art teacher, founder and president of the ASIFA Hungary and founder of the Primanima World Festival of First Animations) and Toma Waszarow (director, producer, screenwriter and winner of the 32nd Alter-Native International Short Film Festival)," according to the release.

This year, the festival is co-organized by the Growth Reaktor Association, with partners including the Mures County Council, the University of Arts Targu Mures and the Targu Mures National Theatre.

The main sponsors are the Targu Mures City Hall, the National Cultural Fund Administration, the Ministry of Culture, the Communitas Foundation and the Bethlen Gábor Fund (Hungary).
