The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania - AmCham Romania made an appeal on Tuesday for the support and integration of education in the country's digitalisation process, at a specialised event organised by the publication Curs De Guvernare.

"The AmCham community is making a rigorous, constant, resilient call to make education an accelerator, not a brake. We cannot just learn technology, we can no longer afford this luxury, we must learn with and through technology," said Elisabeta Moraru, member of the board of AmCham Romania, Country Director Google Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova and Romania.

According to her, it is extremely necessary to accelerate the integration of digital skills into society and education. "Let's make sure we bring children to school, that we support teachers, that we understand how difficult it is for them to integrate these digital skills into primary, secondary, high school or university education. At the end of their studies, these young people must enter the labour market, where they will compete not only with others who have studied with and through technology, but also in other societies, in other economies that have prioritised digitalisation," said the representative of AmCham Romania.

She also provided a series of statistics showing that Romania ranks among the lowest in terms of the percentage of the population with higher education, "but we are the European champions in terms of the number of young people between 16 and 25 who neither work nor study."

Elisabeta Moraru pointed out that AmCham Romania has multiple collaborations on the latest technologies with representatives from academia, the private sector, NGOs, etc., which are extremely necessary for an overview of the level of digitalisation of society.

"Before discussing technology, talking about AI and how it modifies, changes and automates our job tasks, we should know that in the private sector the discussion is whether AI can be used for economic efficiency because there are not enough people to hire," said the representative of AmCham Romania.

On Tuesday, the publication Curs De Guvernare organised the event "The Romanian economy of top technologies: Company Adaptation to Global Trends - Strengths and Opportunities," which was attended by officials responsible for economic policy, experts in the technological integration of companies, and major players in industries that are already technologically advanced or have great potential for re-technologisation.
