At 96pct, Romania reports highest share of dwelling ownership in EU in 2016

Romania is number one in the European Union in terms of the share of the population owning their dwelling, 96 percent in 2016 as against an EU average of 69.3 percent, according to data released on Thursday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). 

In 2016, there were more owners than tenants in every EU member state. The highest share of the population owning their dwelling was registered in Romania (where 96.0 percent were owners), ahead of Lithuania (90.3 percent), Croatia (90.1 percent), Slovakia (89.5 percent) and Hungary (86.3 percent). At the opposite end of the scale, just over half of the population owned their dwelling in Germany (51.7 percent) and Austria (55.0 percent), followed by Denmark (62.0 percent), the United Kingdom (63.4 percent), France (64.9 percent) and Sweden (65.2 percent). 

Only 4 percent of Romania's population last year were tenants, well below the EU average of 30.7 percent percent. By comparison, 48.3 percent of Germans and 45 percent of Austrians were tenants. 

In 2016, more than half (57.5 percent) of the EU population were living in houses and 41.8 percent in flats.

In a majority of member states, most of the population were living in houses in 2016, with the highest proportions being recorded in Ireland (92.5 percent in 2015) and the United Kingdom (84.8 percent), followed by Croatia (79.8 percent), Belgium (77.7 percent) and the Netherlands (76.2 percent). In contrast, flats were the main dwelling type in 10 Member States, notably in Spain and Latvia (in both countries, 66.1 percent of the population were living in flats in 2016), Estonia (62.0 percent), Lithuania (58.2 percent), Germany and Greece (both 57.1 percent). 

In Romania, 63.7 percent of the population were living in houses last year, while 36.3 percent were living in flats.
