Attorney General's Office launches strategic project to combat financial crime on Swiss funding

The Prosecutor's Office with Romania's to Supreme Court of Justice and Cassation (PICCJ) has announced having signed a funding agreement for the implementation of a strategic project in the field of financial investigations and recovery of proceeds from crime.

The program - called "Strengthening institutional capacity in the field of financial investigation and recovery of dproceeds from crime (FIARS)" - is part of the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme running on 11,764,706 Swiss francs, 85% o which is Swiss grants to the tune of10,000,000 Swiss francs, according to Agerpres.

The funding agreement was signed between the Ministry of Justice, as program operator, and the Prosecutor's Office with the Supreme Court of Justice and Cassation, as component operator, under the second Swiss contribution through the "Public Security and Safety Program (Justice)" designed to strengthen the capacity of the judicial system to effectively combat crime and support the rule of law.

The overall objective of FIARS is to increase the capacities of the Romanian law enforcement authorities and judicial authorities in the field of financial investigations and recovery of proceeds from crimes. It will be achieved by conducting training activities for prosecutors, judges, policemen, financial investigators and other specialists; facilitating international cooperation and the exchange of good practices; strengthening the technological capacities necessary to carry out financial investigations.

Partners in the implementation of this project are the Basel Institute for Governance, the National Institute of Magistracy (INM) and the National Agency for the Administration of Impounded Assets (ANABI).
