The Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) has submitted a bill to the Senate that introduces a set of "firm and clear" measures to limit access to sexually explicit online content, with the aim of protecting children and adolescents "from one of the most dangerous phenomena of the digital age: free and unfiltered online pornography", informs, on Thursday, Senator Niculina Stelea, the initiator of the project.

The project provides for the automatic blocking of sites with explicit sexual content by internet service providers, with the possibility of unblocking only by written request, formulated by an adult, who assumes this decision, the prohibition of minors' access to such content, by requiring authorized accounts, created only after age verification, the severe sanctioning of content providers that do not comply with legal obligations - from large fines to suspension of activity, according to a press release from AUR.

The legislative initiative also stipulates that accredited entities carry out independent annual audits of protection measures, as well as explicit obligations regarding the retention of records of accounts and accesses, in compliance with GDPR legislation.

"Romania is today one of the few European countries where a child can access pornographic content without any age verification, without parental consent, without warnings, without filters. It is an immense danger that is already affecting an entire generation. Through this initiative, AUR asks the state to assume its constitutional responsibility to protect children from a phenomenon that has completely gotten out of control. The Internet is no longer a neutral space: it is a minefield in which little ones are exposed, without defense, to digital traumas that can mark their entire lives. AUR calls on all political parties, civic organizations, parents, teachers and opinion leaders to support this law, which pursues a simple but vital objective: protecting the innocence and dignity of our children," Stelea specifies.
