Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) Senate floor leader Petrisor Peiu said on Tuesday that the reason for the decision to lodge a no-confidence motion, although the USR lawmakers announced that they do not support this move, is for the Ciolacu Government to no longer have the right to issue emergency ordinances.
"Last week the Executive issued an emergency ordinance that authorized hiring and salary increases at state-owned companies, as opposed to freezing pensions and allowances. This is why Mr. Chairman Simion, together with the other party leaders, decided that we should still lodge the motion now, before the presidential election, to put an end to this mockery," Peiu declared at a press conference held at Parliament.
According to him, "the coalition has started to govern by exceptions." "The chain-effect austerity ordinance was issued, which established prohibitions for everyone to hire, to increase salaries, grant bonuses, after which the government backtracks and, with Marcel Ciolacu's blessing, gives state-owned companies permission to hire, to raise the incomes of certain social categories, while at the same time freezing salary increases - like in forestry, for instance - although there was a law approved to this effect," Petrisor Peiu said.
AUR Chairman George Simion, claimed that if they do not vote for the no-confidence motion, the USR lawmakers "will be held responsible by their voters who did not empower them to keep Marcel Ciolacu at rule."
"They will fall even more in the eyes of their supporters. They didn't have anyway that many on December 1, 2024, only 11%. USR's continuing this policy of embracing the PSD and smooching unnaturally, nauseously I'd say, with Marcel Ciolacu, will only cause their voting pool to shrink even more. So I would friendly recommend the USR to reconsider not voting for this motion, and implicitly to support Marcel Ciolacu," Simion said.
