The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) lawmakers will vote against the government's budget proposal, the party's national leader, George Simion, told a news conference on Monday before the plenary hall of the Chamber of Deputies, where the party's representatives protested against the "Social Democratic Party (PSD) regime", accusing a "dictatorial" way of "seizing power."
AUR MPs wore black T-shirts reading "Communism with a human face!" around a red rose carried by a skeletal hand.
"As a sign of protest, we will wear these T-shirts throughout the day today in the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies, in the plenary session of the Senate, in the joint plenary session. It is our duty to the Romanian people to reveal those who have led us and have been leading us for 35 years and to present their 'great achievements' to them. No, gentlemen from the PSD, who consider yourselves our masters, you cannot annul democratic elections and then look for the evidence, as you told us to look for terrorists in 1989 and as you turned us into victims of Iliescu's miners. It is not admissible the way in which you have seized power in a dictatorial manner and in which you are trying to block including the suspension of Klaus Iohannis," Simion said.
The AUR leader also demanded that the activity of the parliamentary committee of inquiry into the Nordis case be resumed.
"We come before you today with a clear message that can be read by everyone and that exists in the minds of each of us, it is not like Ciolacu's baccalaureate diploma. (...) It is not possible for the PSD regime to establish dictatorship at the level of the parliamentary committees, at the level of the halls in the Palace of Parliament, at the level of mocking the legal constitutional norms regarding elections, and we saw this last year."
Simion added that AUR will put forth an alternative draft budget. "AUR is clearly positioned, through its lawmakers, against this budget that does not come to solve the systemic problems that the Romanian state has. For the first time we present an alternative budget designed by our specialists. (...) We cannot be frugal, neither as an organisation nor in parts. An attempt was made to buy some lawmaker from SOS. In our country at least they did not dare and it is very good that they did not dare because they know that the AUR lawmakers are incorruptible."
According to the leader of the AUR senators, Petrisor Peiu, the alternative budget proposed by AUR is based on a different economic policy. "The main aspect is that we suggest to decrease the public sector staff by 10% and to index the pay of those who remain. At the same time, we suggest full payment of the pension indexation, as it results from the Pension Law. We also suggest to keep the threshold of EUR 500,000 for the application of the tax on micro-enterprise income or turnover, as it is also called, but with an increase in this rate from 1% to 1.2%. (...) We also suggest to reduce the tax incentives granted to employees in agriculture, food industry, IT and construction for five years, that is, we propose that this year the reduction should be in the amount of 20% of what should be reduced. (...) We also intend to increase children's allowances by 1.04%. And we also intend not to apply the tax on special structures, the so-called pillar tax," said Peiu.
