Chairman of the opposition Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) George Simion declared on Wednesday in connection with Calin Georgescu's arrest for questioning at the Prosecutor General's Office about the financing of his presidential campaign, that until he sees "undeniable" evidence, he suspects this is a politically-driven crackdown.

"We do not understand what competence the Prosecutor General's Office has in this case, we are waiting for clarifications, we are waiting for the Romanian state institutions to refrain from abuses and we will keep permanent guard here, until Mr. Calin Georgescu is released and we see that all procedural documents are respected in his case (...). We are waiting to see evidence, until we see that undeniable evidence we hold out suspicions that this is a political policing case," Simion declared in front of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Asked if he still supports Georgescu's presidential bid, Simion replied that AUR "does not betray."

"As long as I am the Chairman of this party, we will not budge one inch back from the support we have given to democracy and the vote of the Romanian people. We are waiting to see some solid evidence, not accusations circulated in mass media. You parade Calin Georgescu around as being guilty. Guilty of what? Of having filed his candidacy and wanting to renew his candidacy? What is Calin Georgescu's fault? We are not exerting any pressure, we are standing here calmly, peacefully, we are not protesting. We are waiting to see what happens, it is our right and those who distort the truth would better think that they lost the election on the same model as in the United States," Simion said.

"We haven't seen a single piece of solid evidence so far, and I believe that we are the ones on the correct side, the ones who stand for justice. We are waiting for something else than media manipulation, than Ciolacu's fear that he will be nabbed for his involvement in the Nordis affair, we are waiting for evidence. (...) We are elected by the Romanian people, we do not put any pressure on justice, all we want is to see that all procedures are respected," Simion argued.

Calin Georgescu, the former far right presidential contender who was supposed to renew his bid for the state's top job, was taken in by police on Wednesday for questioning at the General Prosecutor's Office.
