The average daily roaming internet traffic in Romania of users from the Republic of Moldova doubled in 2023, reaching almost three times more than the roaming internet traffic in the Republic of Moldova of users from Romania, who paid on average almost 1 euro for every 45 MB consumed daily.
The data were announced on Monday by the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM), after the publication of the Joint Report on bilateral roaming between Romania and the Republic of Moldova in 2023 issued by ANCOM and the National Agency for Regulation in Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI) from Republic of Moldova.
"Roaming Internet traffic between Romania and the Republic of Moldova continued to register massive increases in 2023 as well, against the background of the reduction in the average price paid by users for this service. 1% of mobile communications users in Romania and 10% of those from the Republic of Moldova performed a total of 6 million days of roaming in the neighboring state in 2023", informs a press release from ANCOM sent to AGERPRES.
According to the quoted source, the development of bilateral roaming services in 2023 was fueled by three sources: the 5% increase in the number of roaming users (due to the one-third increase in the number of clients from Romania roaming in the Republic of Moldova), the increase by 33% of the duration of the roaming, as well as the increase in the intensity of the consumption of roaming services (the increase by 32% of the average daily internet consumption on the Romanian roaming card in the Republic of Moldova, respectively the doubling of the consumption in reverse flow).
The governments of Romania and the Republic of Moldova signed on February 11, 2022 an Agreement on the reduction in tariffs for the provision of international roaming services and those of international calls between the two states. The agreement entered into force on March 25, 2022 and is implemented with the support of ANRCETI from the Republic of Moldova, respectively with the support of ANCOM in Romania.
The agreement seeks to create a framework for collaboration between the two states in order to sustainably reduce the tariffs for the provision, on the retail market, of international roaming services: voice, text message and data, respectively those of international calls between the two states.
