Babes-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca is strengthening its international collaborations in the artificial intelligence area, a process marked by a visit from Google Vice President of Engineering & Research and Head of Google Research, Dr Yossi Matias.
"The Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, through the UBB Student i-Lab and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FSEGA), hosted on Monday, 24 November 2025, the official visit of Dr Yossi Matias, an internationally recognised leader for his major contributions to the development of artificial intelligence, machine learning, large-scale algorithms and socially impactful AI applications. The discussions focused on digitalisation strategies, the development of applied research, the integration of AI infrastructures into university activities and opportunities for international collaboration," the university said in a press release on Thursday, agerpres reports.
According to the same source, during the meeting Dr Yossi Matias presented Google Research's vision for the responsible use of artificial intelligence and emphasised the importance of the role played by universities in accelerating the adoption of innovation in society. He also highlighted the ways in which AI can support teaching staff through automation and offer students learning experiences tailored to their individual needs.
"We are honoured to welcome Dr Yossi Matias to UBB and to strengthen our collaboration with a global technology leader such as Google Research. Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing the way people learn, teach and collaborate. For UBB this transformation brings a strategic opportunity to integrate AI responsibly and creatively into our study programmes so that education remains deeply human yet supported by state-of-the-art technologies. Collaboration with international leaders such as Google Research confirms the direction already assumed by our university, building a future based on innovation and technological progress," UBB rector Professor Adrian Petrusel is quoted in the press release as saying.
The meeting at the rectorate was followed by a series of activities organised by UBB Student i-Lab and FSEGA, including a lecture delivered to an audience of more than 500 participants and several dialogue sessions with the academic community, public authorities, companies and start-ups.
"The visit of Dr Yossi Matias confirmed Babes-Bolyai University's position as a strategic partner in research and innovation and as an institution open to dialogue with global leaders in AI. The event created the basis for future collaborations in areas such as AI-assisted education, data infrastructure development, the acceleration of applied research and support for the entrepreneurial ecosystem," the release also reads.
