Romania's interim President Ilie Bolojan on Tuesday participated in an extraordinary informal summit of the European People's Party (EPP), held in videoconference format, the main subject of which was the ongoing situation in Ukraine and coordination at European level to ensure the long-term security of the continent.
According to a statement from the Presidential Administration, the leaders of the European People's Party reconfirmed their "total" commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia's illegal aggression and pointed out that a just and lasting peace is essential to the security of the whole of Europe.
The EPP unanimously pleaded for preserving unity at European level in approaching the current security situation, for taking quick and efficient decisions. "Any peace agreement must respect Ukraine's sovereignty and include both Ukraine and Europe in the negotiation process," the Presidential Administration said.
Bolojan is quoted as expressing Romania's firm support for preserving unity and coordination at EU level in addressing the current challenges.
"His term of office, as interim president, remains focused on ensuring the continuity and stability of Romania and its foreign policy," the Presidential Administration said.
Bolojan also highlighted Romania's constant and substantial support on multiple levels for Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict.
EPP leaders underscored the need to increase investment in defence saying that emphasis must be placed on joint purchases of essential military equipment to reduce costs and maximise efficiency.
"The European Union must act quickly to strengthen its collective security and ensure a stable future for both Ukraine and the entire European continent."
Participants in Tuesday's meeting said that security guarantees will be a key element that has to involve the United States of America, as that is the only way to ensure credible deterrence.
Bolojan also mentioned the difficult situation in which Moldova finds itself, pleading for the continuation of European support to Moldova, especially amid this autumn's parliamentary elections and the suspension of US funding.
