Acting President Ilie Bolojan said on Thursday that the Romanian Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior will cooperate with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to straighten out the issues related to the suspension of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for Romania, and that public clarifications in this regard will follow.

"The two ministries that worked on the implementation of this project, the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior, will work with the Department of Homeland Security in the coming period to clarify the issues related to the suspension of this procedure and I am convinced that public clarifications will follow in this regard. The two ministries that have technical and institutional competencies in this field, that have worked on this for years, know exactly what the requirements are and can clarify these issues," Bolojan said in Paris after attending the "Coalition of the Willing" summit on Ukraine security, when asked if Romania will have a special representative to negotiate with the U.S. the visa-free travel program.

The implementation of the Visa Waiver Program for Romania is currently under review and the operationalization of the ESTA will be postponed until a date to be announced by the American side, the Foreign Ministry informed on Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that the U.S. government is evaluating Romania's recent designation for joining the VWP, to ensure adherence to its strict security requirements.

"During this review the United States is pausing implementation of the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) for Romanian citizens. This pause will remain in effect until the United States completes its review. Romanians seeking to travel to the United States for short-term business or tourism purposes should continue to apply for the appropriate nonimmigrant ('B') visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate," the DHS said.
