Interim Mayor of Bucharest Stelian Bujduveanu told the press on Saturday that, together with National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) representatives, they will have talks with Distrigaz to discuss gas metre seals, criticising them as ineffective in preventing accidents such as the recent explosion in Sector 5.
'These decorative seals are designed to prevent gas theft, not to save lives,' Bujduveanu said on Saturday. 'Our role is to protect citizens, and we expect a much more direct and practical approach from Distrigaz regarding gas metres,' he added.
The mayor also gave updates on the housing situation for victims of the explosion. Two categories of accommodation are being prepared, city-hall-owned apartments, which are being inspected and equipped for immediate use, as well as privately rented apartments, funded through nearly 3 million lei allocated from the City Hall's emergency reserve fund.
Regarding Dimitrie Bolintineanu High School, located near the explosion site, Bujduveanu confirmed that pupils cannot return to classes in the building until the neighbouring structure, damaged in the explosion, is deemed safe.
The explosion at a block of flats on Vicina Street killed three people, injured twenty and affected more than 400 residents. Safety checks and evaluations are ongoing.
