Bucharest School Inspectorate to suspend in-person classes due to heavy rainfall

The Bucharest School Inspectorate submitted a proposal to suspend in-person classes in the capital due to severe weather warnings, Inspector General Florian Lixandru told AGERPRES on Tuesday.

Asked by AGERPRES whether he was considering suspending classes because of the weather alerts, the inspector replied: "Yes, I have submitted the proposal to suspend in-person classes in Bucharest during the Code Red period to the Bucharest Municipal Committee for Emergency Situations (CMBSU)."

Meteorologists extended the Code Red warning for heavy rainfall to include five counties and the city of Bucharest. The alert is set to come into force on Tuesday evening at 21:00.

According to the latest warnings issued by the National Meteorological Administration, between 7 October at 21:00 and 8 October at 15:00, torrential and heavy rainfall is expected in the counties of Constanta, Calarasi, Ialomita, Giurgiu, Ilfov and Bucharest. Isolated thunderstorms may also occur, and in short periods or cumulatively, rainfall amounts are expected to reach 80-100 l/sqm, and in some areas 120-140 l/sqm.
