Business from market services provided to the population decreased by 0.2%, gross series, in the first five months of 2025, compared to the same period last year, and by 0.7%, as an adjusted series depending on the number of business days and seasonality, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Thus, in the period January 1 - May 31, 2025 compared to the period January 1 - May 31, 2024, the evolution of the activity of market services provided to the population, gross series, was generated by the activities of travel agencies and tour operators (-16.6%) and gambling and other recreational activities (-7.2%). Increases were recorded in hairdressing and other beauty activities (+20.6%), washing and (dry) cleaning of textile articles and fur products (+6.7%) and hotel and restaurant activities (+1.7%).
Regarding the market services provided to the population, turnover volume increased by 9.6%, gross series, in May 2025, compared to the previous month, due to increases recorded in hotel and restaurant activities (+12.5%), hairdressing and other beauty activities (+4.9%), travel agencies and tour operators activities (+3%), gambling and other recreational activities (+2.6%) and washing and (dry) cleaning of textile articles and fur products (+1.5%).
The volume of turnover in market services provided to the population, series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, increased by 0.7%, in May 2025, compared to the previous month.
Compared to May 2024, the activity of market services provided to the population, gross series, recorded a turnover 3.6% higher, due to increases recorded in hairdressing services and other beauty activities (+16.7%), gambling activities and other recreational activities (+5.4%), hotel and restaurant activities (+4.4%) and in washing and (dry) cleaning activities of textile articles and fur products (+3%). The activities of travel agencies and tour operators decreased by 21.9%.
The activity of market services provided to the population, series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, increased by 3.5%, in May 2025, compared to May 2024.
According to the INS, net turnover (excluding VAT) is calculated by summing up invoiced revenues resulting from sales of goods, sales of merchandise, execution of works and provision of services, less discounts and other cuts granted to customers. Not included in turnover are: the value of packaging returned after delivery; excise duties; subsidies received from public authorities or EU institutions; sale of own land and fixed assets; discounts and other cuts granted to customers.
